Course Project

I will create a Sophie Book for Dr. Burns Digital Dreams course. He does things a bit differently, but the course is very informative. Each student must call Dr. Burns once a week. Yesterday, we spoke for an hour! It was a great conversation. I learned so much having one on one time with Dr. Burns.

If you don't know what a sophie book (big possibilities here!) is here is a link: http://www.sophieproject.org/

I can see so many possibilities with this. I've thought for a very long time that if students didn't have to buy a text, they could spend that money on technology.

The TES text is proof that online texts are begining to fit into the tenure process so I think that takes care of that aspect of the issue! I'm sure there are other issues that aren't even on my radar. Let me know what you think.

Once I get my Sophie book up I will link it here. Also, there is another link to an inner section of Sophie somewhere in the Technological Ecologies & Sustainability text (great text by the way).

Things are looking up today!

I'm including the link to the digital text we are using for Dr. Burns Class:

First Day of New Media Course

Today is the first day of Dr. Burns Writing in Networked Environments. I said that I would keep you all updated so here goes: I've had issues with Blackboard, bummer. Also, Blackboard was down University wide for most of the day. However, about 45 minutes ago Blackboard is now up and running and so is my access! It has been a while since I've had a course in Blackboard so it is a bit slow going, but I'm getting there. I haven't found a discussion board yet (could be because its been down all day or maybe it's just me!) I found the course text which is an etext available to all, and free. the title is Technological Ecologies & Sustainability it is published by Computers and Composition in conjuction with several others. The authors are some wickedly smart folks and you will definately recognize them. I just printed off the introduction (I just can't read all of it online!) More later. I'm so excited!

New Media Course

The online New Media course I am taking this summer begins July 13th. I'm very excited. I will blog here during the course. I hope that our little group can keep a new media connection through our blogs created for Dr. C., then we can share and collaborate in the area of new media.

More around July 13th or 14th!

Here is my Trailor. It isn't much. I can see that this is a format that I need a great deal of time to work in.

Moving chunks around

This is still very rough. I haven't done anything about citing. As a matter of fact, I've cut some out. What I have done is to reorder it and do some more editing. I know that I need to go back and connect and cite correctly.

However, what do you think of the order? Do you like it? What could I do to make it better? I think I'd like to insert some footage from NCow. Possibly students talking about writing. How hard it is. how they do it. Their process. What writing means to them.

Another Version of Conversations On Writing

I know it is a play on the NCoW, but it also refers to Hemmingway and King's works titled On Writing. I want to add 'Ode to Joy' as the background music and possibly some voice over. I also need to update the credits. I would love suggestions. There are some fascinating people in this (re)mix. I know this work pushes fair use to the max. Let me know what you think about that too.

My Project in the Works!

I've learned how to capture and edit google and youtube videos mixed with my own interviews using Prism Video Converter and Flashlynx. I've changed my project. I decided to work with the interviews I did for Donna's class. I did not use the videos in my work in her class, although I did use quotes from a written transcript I created for a .doc paper.

I want to add some voice over and music, and more footage. How long does it need to be? 10 or 15 Minutes?

This is still a rough project but I'm following my bliss! I would love comments:)

World Digital Library

I heard about this on NPR and saw a clip on the news. Sounds like it may be a very beneficial site. It looks like a huge world effort!

AAVE Research Repository

Tonight I'm researching AAVE in youtube. I'm posting a few links here for now.

This is a collection of varying views. I don't know where I'm going with this. My intent was to find differing views.

Final Project

I am so torn over the final project that I'm having difficulty. At the beginning of the semester the internment idea seemed so interesting. It's not that I couldn't complete it now, the issue is that I have strong interests in several other areas, such as dialects in composition (including AAVE), and composition pedagogy. I've come up with a simplistic idea to help basic writers learn to develop their writing. So many directions, and so little time to decide. Which way do I turn? Must I stay with the original idea or do I have time to do something different?

Video Sentence and Reading

Ok, the clip below is my video sentence. As for the reading, I read 11, 12, and 13. I found Griffin's table very helpful. Also, I thought the collaborative discussion somewhat helpful, but only somewhat because I had already recognized the extensive benefits of collabortive learning in the classroom. I already knew that those benefits would easily carry over to multi modality composition. Chapter 12 has many practical tips for use and need of technologies utilized for a new media course. Of course our CLIC center will advance TAMU's multimodal capabilities enormously. Chapter 13 stresses the need for the continous availability of technology during class hours as well as outside of the classroom. Also, this last chapter stresses the need for students to learn new modalities in order to be prepared for today's workforce.

Dr. Carter,

Just a note to let you know I wasn't in class last thursday. It was one of those really bad arthritis days (I hate the extreme weather shifts of the spring). I had to resort to my rarely used narcotic prescriptions to get through the day. I really didn't want to drive while taking strong medication. However, I did do the video sentence, I just labeled it wrong!

Fingerpainting with class clips

Where There Is a Will There's a Way

A Slice of My Life: More Fingerpainting

I couldn't load this in blogger, so I found another route. It's pretty rough, and low resolution. But, it is practice

Is anyone else having difficulty with blogger?

For some reason, I can't comment on my comments or upload video!

This link was sent to me as a joke. However, when I opened the link, I thought it to be a cool and innovate mixture of old and new technology. Check it out!

Interview for DDO 776 class

Today I used my Vado to interview 3 community college instructors. I've been able to upload the video to my Zen player and save the files to my computer. I am going to try to work with the video in moviemaker next.

Carlinville: My Home Town

Waiting for Vado!

I am still waiting for my Vado. I hope it gets here for class tonight. I've already received the tripod. I hoped that it would arrive yesterday. It was such a beautiful day out yesterday. I planned to practice by recording my dog doing some tricks, but also no vado yet.

I added a link to the device on Amazon.com. I noticed vado's have gone up $5 since I bought mine!

German Soldiers Conscripted As East Texas Loggers

A friend of mine told me about an editorial in the Mount Pleasant newspaper concerning the conscription of captured German soldiers working as loggers during WW II. I contacted the paper and kindly enough the editor sent me a pdf of the piece. It is titled "Nazis in East Texas." The author Bob Bowman tells some interesting stories about the lives of these POWs. Furthermore, he says that they get little mention in history. He does, however, name a book entitled Nazis in the Pineywods by Mark Choate. Sounds like an interesting read.

Wow, I've got to learn to compress Audio

I apologize to any of you that followed my link and waited and waited for the audio to load. Dr. Carter can you tell me how to compress audio?

Class Audio Project

I used audacity to mix it. I left it a little rough, because you know literacy is violent! Also, I really didn't know how to do it better. Anyway, I uploaded it using zshare, very easy to do. Thank you Luca Sylvester! I hope you don't mind that I used your interviews. If you do please notify me, and I'll take it down.

vado

I just bought a creative labs vado with tripod for 65 bucks. I don't know if it is a great deal. However, it looks like it will do what I need for this course. I'm hoping that it will save me the gas I spend renting or borrowing equipment from school, plus I get to keep it after the course is over! Thanks to the IRS refund, my vado could be considered on the house.

Uploading Audio

In order to upload my little test audio, I had to sign up with podbean and zshare to find a bridge to get the audio on my blogg. I probably did it all wrong, and there are probably easier ways to do this. However, it did work. One problem I ran into was that it took a very long time to upload. Shannon said that was probably due to the fact that I didn't compress the audio.

I have a audio project to upload from our group work all ready. I going to attempt to find an easier way to do it this time!

Recording Upload TEST

This is just a recording, uploading TEST!

New Media

I've been attempting to create a podcast with audacity. Ok, so I got the recording done, but I can't get the darn Lame thing to download and be located on the right space in my computer in order to transfer my Audacity recordings anywhere. Technology is wonderful. Technology is terrible! And, my head is pounding! I've signed up for Zshare, Podbean, and I don't know what else in hopes of finding a patch.

I will really really be glad when we address this in class.

Informative website concerning Latin American Jews and What the US Did with them

I haven't as yet followed the links on this site nor have a verified the information presented. However, there are some very interesting accusations put forth. Merits further research.

Crystal City Footage

This film is based on a DOJ propaganda piece. It shows actual footage of the Crystal City facility. However, most of the film is concerned with the Japanese Detainees. I am most interested in this research project with the German Detainees as I have read that some were traded to Germany for American citizens. My guiding research question is how many were of Jewish decent and traded? Furthermore, what happened to this particular group of people?

Dallas Internment Camps

For this project, I plan to research Dallas area Internment camps from World War II. I guess we'll see what I can dig up! I know that some interesting happenings did occur, and for quite some time I have planned to write a book about the trading of prisoners to Nazi Germany. The book would be similar to Schindler's List, Snow Falling On Cedars, etc. It will be interesting to see what new information I can come up with!
